Europeans first discovered Brazil when the Portuguese landed in Porto Seguro in 1500. They first sighted land 30 kilometers away, but Captain Pedro Alvares Cabral navigated to Porto Seguro (translates to "Safe Haven") because it was exactly that: a beautiful, tranquil bay and safe haven. Today it is still a beautiful arc where land embraces the ocean, known for its stunning beaches as well as thriving party scene. You can enjoy the tropical paradise with others at Terapuã beach, or enjoy the solitude and desolation of Ponta Grange and Mutá beaches that are practically deserted. Curuípe, Itacimirim, and Mundaí beaches are serene destinations for enjoying clear coral pools at low tide or you can explore the mangroves at the Rio dos Mangues beach. Porto Seguro has something for the serious, though too, and if you want to explore the historical landmarks from the beginning of Brazil's heritage, you can visit the landmark buildings built between 1503 and 1551 that are still maintained and signal the historical importance of Porto Seguro.
